There’s a particular kind of joy that comes with photographing the same family more than once, and I don’t take that trust for granted. This family found me years ago to photograph their engagement and then their wedding day. I remember this mom and dad’s wedding day in Glencoe, MN like it was yesterday. There’s something so full-circle about watching a couple say “I do,” and then years later, walking into my studio to meet the family they’ve built together. Since that day, I’ve photographed this family through the arrival of their first daughter, then their second, and now their third – Emelia Grace.

Getting to document a family across so many seasons of life is exactly why I do this work. It’s not just a session to me. It’s a relationship, built one appointment at a time, and it’s a privilege I genuinely cherish. When a family trusts me again and again, that tells me everything about the kind of connection I strive to create in every studio session.

Emelia Grace came into this session exactly the way I hope every newborn will: peacefully. With two big sisters in the room — full of energy, giggles, and all the sweet chaos that comes with siblings – Emelia slept soundly through nearly the entire thing. Big sisters are not always the easiest addition to a newborn session, but these two girls were troopers. They followed directions, they were gentle with their new baby sister, and honestly, their excitement over “the new baby” made the whole studio feel warm and full of love.

The Jacket Tradition: Honoring a Military Family Through Photography

This family holds a piece of my heart for another reason too. Dad is a Captain in the United States Air Force, and with each daughter born into this family, we’ve carried on a tradition I look forward to every single time: photographing him in his military jacket, holding his newest little girl.

There is something deeply meaningful about capturing military family photography this way – a tangible piece of his service, held gently against the newest life he’s helping raise. With three daughters now, we have three of these portraits, each one a little different, each one a piece of their family’s story that will be treasured for generations. It’s one of my favorite traditions in my work, and I’m so grateful this family lets me be part of it every time. Can you tell which sister is which in the three jacket photos below??
